John Scanlan Obituary

John Daniel Scanlan, 84, of Avon, beloved husband of 59 years to Marianne (Opuszynski) Scanlan, passed away on Sunday February 23, 2025, surrounded by loving family. John was born on September 3, 1940, to the late John L. and Marie A. (Calliends) Scanlan. John was raised in East Boston and Melrose, MA, where he spent time with his sister, cousins, and aunts and uncles, especially on the beach in Nahant and family gatherings at their homes. He graduated from Melrose High School in 1958 and continued his education at Bentley College, earning a bachelor’s degree in accounting, and then Northeastern University where he earned an MBA. John enlisted in the Army National Guard and served six months of active duty at Fort Bliss in El Paso, TX. John was a successful accountant, often working in the private sector of manufacturing, where he achieved promotions and accolades for his skills in financial analysis, accounting systems, and government contracts. John was an avid chess player, teaching his children the game and particularly enjoying the game with his grandson. He also enjoyed golf, playing when there was time and not picky about where or with whom he could play. He enjoyed watching the New England Patriots and Notre Dame football team during football season and the Boston Red Sox during the summer baseball season. One of the greatest experiences of his life was attending a Notre Dame football game with his son cheering on his team. He was a lively commentator from his couch during games, often bemoaning referee calls and coach choices. John memorably volunteered to coach his daughter’s soccer team, a game that was unknown to him, and learned everything as he went. John enjoyed traveling to several places around Europe, even having the opportunity to fly on the Concorde to Paris and back to the US. He often regaled friends with stories of attending Oktoberfest, driving around Ireland, and staying in bed and breakfasts in England. John will be missed by the love of his life, wife, Marianne Scanlan of Avon, CT; his beloved children, son Kevin P. and wife Meghan Scanlan of New Canaan, CT and daughter, Ann Marie Scanlan and husband, Gabriel Vicoveanu of Melrose, MA; grandson, Quinn Scanlan and a sister, Barbara Scanlan of Melrose, MA. John was predeceased by both parents, John L and Marie A. Scanlan. Services will be private. For online memory sharing and condolence please visit www.carmonfuneralhome.com
